WAIKARI AND HAWARDEN SOLDIERS.
A social evening to tender farewell to soldiers of the Waikari and Hawarden districts who are leaving for the front was held in the Hawarden Hall on Wednesday evening, and despite the unfavourable weather there was a large attendance. Dr Little, on behalf of the Hawarden residents, presented Privates E. Alien, J. Allison, B. Hobau, G. Wattie, and 11. McDonald with a set of military brushes, and spoke in eulogistic terms of them, wishing them success and a safe return. The chairman of the Waipara Council, Mr E. Evans, on behalf of the Waikari residents, presented Privates G. Wattie, J. Glendiiming, and E. Allen with safety razors, and wished them good fortune. Mr Evans addressed the gathering and emphasised the necessity of every eligible man applying for and obtaining a certificate of registration. He also thanked the parents for the sacrifice they were making in giving their sons for a just cause in the time of the Empire's necessity. Cheers were given for the soldiers and speakers. A song by Master Don Mcintosh was well received, and dancing was kept up till an early hour, the music being supplied by Mr Piercv.
