ARMY SERVICE CORPS. 5/31—Sergeant Herbert Francis Whitley. , THE LATE LIEUT. ALLEN. The Hon. James Allen, Minister of Defence, has received a cablegram from the Keeper of the. Privy Purse, expressing the regret of their Majesties the King and Queen at the loss the Minister and the Army have sustained by the death of his son, the late lieutenant J. H. Allen. Their Majesties also expressed their sympathy with Mr Allen in his sorrow. Sympathy with the Minister has been very widely and genuinely expressed, and a large number of letters and telegrams of Condolences have been sent to him. The condolences of the Commander of the New Zealand Forces at the front, and his command have been sent, and similar expressions have come from Australia and from the Old Country- The late Lieutenant Allen was serving under General Hunter Weston. SERGEANT I. P. D. STOCKER. The Registrar of the Supreme Court, Christchurch, has received news that Sergeant Ingelow P. D. Stocker (Canterbury, Battalion) has died of wounds. He was 21 years of age and was the youngest son of Mr Basil Stocker, of the Legislative Council staff, Wellington. Sergeant Stocker was educated at the Waitaki Boys' High School and at the Victoria College, where he studied for the law. He was a member of the staff of the Wellington Magistrate's Court, and, subsequently, of the Supreme Court, Christchurch, where he had been about 12 months when the war broke out. He was a keen Territorial and was a.sergeant in the A Company of the Ist (Canterbury) Regiment. He joined the Main Expeditionary Force as lance-sergeant, and received promotion in Egypt. PRIVATE HAROLD TREWERN, Private Harold Trewcrn (Otago Battalion, killed in action), was the eighth son of Mrs 11. J. Trewern, of 100 Bamford Street, Woolston. He was 25 years of age, and was educated at the Lyttelton District High School, and at the Christchurch Technical College. As a clerk he joined the Railway Locomotive Department, and was subsequently transferred to Westport and to Wellington. He was a keen Territorial, and held a commission as lieutenant |in the Senior Cadets. He made several attempts to get away with the main force, and finally he went with the Otago Battalion by giving up his j commission and joining as a private ' six hours before the force sailed. He and the late Lieut. Skelton were close friends.
