* As Wellington climbs high and higher up its hills the problem of providing quick and comfortable means of carrying the" people to their homes on the heights becomes greater. At present a cable tram service climbing direct from Willis Street through the Kelburne tunnel, and an ordinary car service going the long way round, connects the fashionable hill suburb of Kelburne with the city. The city engineer now proposes to connect the ordinary tram service where it emerges from the Karori tunnel, with lifts descending to Bouleott Street, which is in the heart of the city. The lifts, which would be of similar character to those in' use on the underground railways of London, would raise passengers to Wellington Tcrraco, from whence a new car liue would be constructed running round Victoria College and continuing south so as to connect with the main Karori Road.
