HEATHCOTE WILLIAMS SHIELD. A CHALLENGE MATCH. - The second challenge match this season for the Heathoote Williams Shield was started at Hagley Park yesterday afternoon, between the Christchurcli Boys' High School eleven, which holds the trophy, and a team from the Palmerston North High School, which is making its first appearance in this competition. Rain interfered somewhat with the play. The start was delayed owing to the state of the wicket, and play was also cut short by the rain. Winning the toss, the Palmerston North team sent the Christchurcli eleven in to bat on a difficult' wicket. D. Nixon, the left-hander who has been making big scores for the school this season, was run out early, but T. Milliken batted brightly and knocked up his second century in Shield matches this season. The innings closed at 199, and stumps were then drawn for the day. Hodder, a bowler who can turn the ball both ways, got eight wickets, chiefly with off-breaks. The Palmerston boys batted this morning, on a bowler's wicket, and few of them made better than a half-hearted attempt to play the bowling. They seemed affected by stage fright, and the innings was over inside an hour. The visitors had to follow on, and When the luncheon adjournment was taken, four wickets were down for 45 runs in their second innings.
After lunch, wickets again fell quickly, and the team was out at 82. It batted one short, Mullins not having batted in the first innings. Christchurch Boys' High School thus won by an innings and 77 runs. Scores: — CHRISTOHURCH BOYS' HIGH SCHOOL. First. Innings. D. Nixon run out . . 11 T. Milliken c and b Hodder . . . . 108 C. E. DEATH OF A. O. JONES. By Cable. —Press Association.—Copyright. (Received December 22, 9.20 a.m.) LONDON, December 2'l. The death has occurred of A. O. Jones,
the famous cricketer. ITe never fully recovered from the attack of pneumonia he had during his Australian visit. [With the death of Arthur Owen Jones, • English cricket loses one of its best-known and most successful county, captains and one of its most dashing batsmen. A born leader of men, an unselfish cricketer in every respect, and possessing an excess of pluck, he took over the leadership of the Notts County eleven in 1900, and almost immediately his influence was felt. It was largely due to Jones's leadership that Notts became the champion cricket county in 1907. The 1907-8 M.C.C. team in Australia was sent out under his leadership, but for the greater part of the tour he was laid aside by a serious illness. Of late years he has suffered much from ill-health, and at the beginning of the last cricket season in England he was compelled to retire altogether from the game. A splendid batsman, a remarkably fine fielder, and a very useful ■ change bowler of slow breaks, Jones was a commanding figure in English cricket. Some years, ago, before his recurrent illnesses affected his athletic prowess, he was also a fine Rugby football player, and as captain he gave the Leicester Rugby Football Club great service.] The Municipal Officers played a match against the Technical College Old Boys at Sydenham Park on Saturday. Scores: Municipal officers, 329 for four wickets (Timms 95, Willis 88 not out, Eadie 62, Batten 35, Esselborn 24 not out). Technical College, 117 (Goldsbury 62, Dobbs 27, Smith 10). Willis, Horwell, and Carr bowled best for the Municipal Officers, and Goldsbury, McClure, Dobbs, and Feast for the College.
