SOME HARD FIGHTING.

GERMANS IN THE ARDENNES. DRIVEN BACK WITH HEAVY LOSS '"* » • PARIS, August 30. L There has been hard fighting in the Ardennes. A French army, stopped a force, including the Tenth Army Corps . and the' Guards, formerly under Gen eral von Emmich at Liege. Four French Army Corps drove the enemy back on Guise, with heavy loss. SEVERE ACTION IN PROGRESS. GERMANS ATTACK FROM.SHE^--r POSITION OF BRITISH ARMY. PARIS, August 31. A severe action is progressing to the, south-westward of Mezieres on a line v _ from Launois to Signy-la-Baye. The indications are that Sir John French's _''- army is on or south of a line from Guise to , Signy-la-Baye. The Germans are thus facing the salient, of which the British force is top of thc,«line, and the French forces constitute the two wings. -It- is officially stated in Paris that a German force is attacking from the west' on a front extending from Guise to Laferen, which is north-westward of Laon. It was officially stated at midnight that a German infantry regiment, in essaying to cross the Meuse at Sassaye, was practically wiped out. The progress of* the German wing has forced the French left to give ground. M. Millerand, Minister 'for War, has

returned from the front very favourably impressed with the'military situation.
