LICENSING LEGISLATION.

SUGGESTED AMENDMENTS. At a meeting of the members of the Provincial Council of the Canterbury Licensed Trade, there being a full and representative meeting, held at the Licensed Victuallers' Association's rooms yesterday, the proposed Licensing J Jill was brought up for consideration, and the following resolutions were carried . unanimously:— "That this council, representing the licensed trade in this district, is firmly of opinion that .no, reduction should be made by the Government in the majority now required tc carry local and national prohibition, as any majority short of a three-fifths majority won id not be adequate to command a substantial and moral respect for the law." '' That strong representation should be made to the Government to so amend the licensing law that in the "event of national prohibition being carried by a three-fifths majority at any election, seven years .shall elapse before such vote shall take effect and thereby give the ttade and the Government sufficient time to adjust their business and fiuance." '' That in respect to alt these nolicense districts unable at any election to maintain a three-fifths majority favourable to no-license, restoration .shall be deemed to be carried to the extent of 50 per cent, of the former licenses, and that, such an amendment be iuserted iii a new Licensing Bill next session." 4 ' That copies of these resolutions be forwarded to the National Defence Council at Wellington to be urged upon the acceptance of the Government, and that copies be sent. to every member of Parliament for the Provincial District of Canterbury with a request that they take steps to - have, the resolutions embodied into the Government's new Licensing Bill. 1 '
