ELLERSLIE GOSSIP

DOINGS ON THE TRACKS CANDIDATES FOR AVONDALE The near approach of the Avondale Racing Club’s spring carnival has quickened interest in proceedings on : Ellerslie tracks, and already some ! horses are being ticked off as likely i to play prominent parts in the settlement of their respective races. Both Wild Country and Thunderstorm have returned to headquarters after their unsuccessful trip to Marton, where the former’s third in the maiden event was the only stakemoney realised on the journey. However, there was compensation in that Wild Country was not at her best, for she did not do well after leaving home, and was also very sore in her preliminary. Mon Star has been a poor racing prospect under D. Moraghan’s charge, and her owner-trainer has decided not to persevere with her any longer. The Australian-bred mare has been sent on a visit to the Waikato sire. Gay Shield (by Gay Crusader). J. Chisholm has Waltzer moving along on the tracks in the hope that the son of Hymettus will show some of the form which characterised his efforts two years ago, but a good future cannot be predicted for the old campaigner. He is 10 years old. at an ago where deterioration, more so than improvement, can be expected. It is interesting and significant to note that Ellerslie lias not a representative in the open six furlongs flutter on the first day of the impending Avondale meeting indicating the dearth of good sprinters at headquarters. 111-health has proved it necessary for W. Hawkins to undergo an operation. but he will not enter hospital until after the Avondale gathering, where he has Gay Cockade engaged. Respirator has continued to form one of J. Buchanan’s active team, but there is nothing in his composition to suggest that he will be of good service during the season. He was schooled on Tuesday morning, but it was not impressive, as he has done better on previous occasions. The son of Tea Tray is a long-striding galloper who requires track conditions hard to perform at all well. F. Weston’s recent recruit. Royal Day, will bo useful for hurdle racing later on if Tuesday’s display is a crii terion. His condition is poor just now, and until this is rectified not a great deal will be expected from him. Tho son of Day Comet is owned in j tho Xorth, where lie displayed flashes 1 of galloping ability in the high-weight ; Class. That Llanoro is rapidly coming into form has been evident from the consistency with which she has recorded fair sprints since her racing at the Pakuranga Hunt Club’s meeting. Latterly she has been quite free of the trouble accorded J. Chisholm soon after her arrival at Ellerslie in June, and sho has been hitting out in a manner which augurs well for her spring campaign. The Ilawera trainer. J. Brown, has booked accommodation for two horses for tho Avondale and Auckland spring meetings, viz.. Silvermine and Awaken.
