ST. LEGER WINNER
NOT TRAINED LAST SEASON COST 12,000 GUINEAS Singapore, winner of yesterday’s Doncaster St. Leger, was bought as a yearling by his present owner, Lord Glanety, for 12,000 guineas. At Ascot on June 16 the Gainsborough colt, having his first race, was fourth with 8.1 in a field of six over a mile, the winner being Christopher Robin, 9.0. Singapore won his first race at Sandown on Juno 27, when, starting a warm favourite, he won the Sandringham Foal Plate in a canter from Callcnby. Strangely enough Callonby is owned by Lord Woolavington, whose Parenthesis was beaten into second place by Singapore yesterday. Owner’s Good Run Referring to this success, a London critic wrote: “Lord Glanely lias enjoyed the most successful fortnight of his whole racing career, for lie won Oaks this year with his beautiful filly. Rose of England, and one of his horses picked up a very nice stake when Singapore, a son of Gainsborough that cost 12,000 guineas as a yearling, cantered away with the Sandringham Foal Plate at Sundown Park. ‘True, he had not a very tough opposition to contend with, but he could do no more than beat Callonby pointless. “Singapore is on the upgrade, and if bo continues to progress he will be allowed to take bis chance in the St. Leger. He is bred to stay. “Racing at Sandown was of light interest. The use of hydrants and a good covering of herbage had resulted in a better surface than has been obtainable at most places lately, yet a downpour would do an immensity of good even to this well-tended track. “The light-actioned Singapore appeared to be suited by the conditions underfoot, however, and at long last he gained brackets in the Foal Plate. “Xothing was able to get him out of a canter, but although the opposition was so weak, this high-priced purchase in yearling days now gives promise of doing better things. Tt was impossible to train him last year.” The result of the St. Leger appears on the main Turf page of this issue.
