PUBLISHING TENDERS
CHAMBER OBJECTS TO P.W.D. SECRECY PRACTICE IN CANADA The Auckland Chamber of Commerce Council agreed this morning to repeat its request to the Government for publicity in connection with public works tenders. The decision was made on the motion of Mr. A. G. Lima, and Mr. L. A. Eady indicated the existence of suspicions of discrimination when public works tenders were not announced publicly. The chamber wrote to the British Columbia Products Bureau of the Vancouver Board of Tnade, on the subject of tenders and public announcements, and the secretary. Dr. E. P. Neale, received the reply that the general procedure in Canada is to publish the results of all public works tenders, both civic and provincial, but in all cases, if not published, the tenders are open for inspection by an interested party. FULL INFORMATION In the event of the lowest bid,not being accepted for reason possibly not suitable for publication, the newspapers would be given the amount of the successful bidder only, and other interested bidders could obtain full information on personal application. It was not believed that the Government was obliged to publish results of tenders, though it was generallydone, but the information was always available to other bidders. The Auckland Chamber is strongly of opinion there should be no secrecy. The practice in Canada has been communicated to the Associated Chambers of Commerce, and the representations already made will be continued.
