SCHOOL BOOK COSTS
NO REDUCTION POSSIBLE PARENTS MUST STILL PAY In reply to a resolution from the Auckland Primary’ School Committees’ Association urging that school books should be standardised and provided free of charge, or at cost price, to primary’ school scholars, the Education Department stated that text-books are already standardised and that no child may be compelled to purchase a book not on the authorised list. A letter to this effect was received at a meeting of the Auckland Education Board this morning. “This is merely side-stepping the complaipt,” Mr. R. Hoe pointed out. The teachers had made a request which had not been answered. He considered that books could well be supplied at a cheaper rate even if not free of charge. The secretary. Mr. D. W. Dunlop, said that the printers said they were unable to bring the cost any lower. This point was being kept in view constantly. “Meanwhile the parents .Raj’,” commented Mr. Hoe.
