TREATING UNEMPLOYED RELIEF MT. ROSKILL DISCUSSION Recognising the necessity for retrenchment in the administration hospital and charitable air funds, the Mount Roskill Road Board, at its meeting last evening, endorsed the principle that before any further bui d ing is undertaken by the hospital board the work should be authorised by the ratepayers of the various contributing local districts and that p n l employment relief should be treated as a national question. The board’s delegates to the Hospital Conference, Messrs. S. I. Goodall and J. Donald, were instructed to take action accordingly. In response to a petition from the Akarana Golf Club asking for a remission of rates on its property of acres, the finance committee recommended and the board agreed to remit the 10 per cent, penalty for the year ended March 31, 1930. In regard to the current year's rates, the fianance committee reported that it had no recommendation to make. The board's engineer. Mr. John Dawson. reported that the western area drainage contracts were being carried out satisfactorily and that the work of tar-sealing Buckland Read and a section of Selwyn Road had been completed. Messrs. E. F. Jones. S. I. Goodall and E. W. D. Foote were appointed to co-operate with the Onehunga Borough Council in countering the representations recently made to the Minister of Lands by the One Tree Hill Borough Council in regard to that body’s claim for sole control of the One Tree mu Domain. This is at present vested in representatives appointed by th® Onehunga Borough Council. Mount Roskill Road Board and One Tree Hill Borough Council, certain members of Parliament and Campbell trusters. OPOSSUMS IN PARK A discussion on the increase of opossums in Waikowhai Park was introduced by a letter from a trapper who asked permission to catch these animals. Mr. R- W. Sanft held that the opossums would be poisoned, probably with strychnine, involving a slow death, when the animals would wunder away and ultimately become a greater nuisance dead than alive. It was admitted by other members that opossums were certainly multiplying in the district, but it could not be said that they had become a nuisance. On the motion of the chairman. Mr. E. F. Jones, permission to trap the opossums was refused.

“It is not every local body that has the fortune of having two members of Parliament at its disposal,” remarked Mr. Jones, when Messrs. W. J. Jordan and G. C. Munns, M.P.’s, attended the board’s meeting for the purpose of becoming acquainted with such of the board’s business requiring their attention in Parliament. The Transport Board wrote agreeing to pay £IOO for damage done to the Dominion Road foetpaths, caused during tramway extension work. The Local Government Loans Board asked for a copy of the estimates for concreting Three Kings Road ind inquired the amount of the special rate proposed to be struck as security for the repayment of the £17,000 loan required for the work.
