MR. FIELD’S WORK
Sir, — For many years past, Mr. Field’s forecasts have consistently shown that, even without the facilities and emoluments that are lavished upon official scientists, he has gained some wonderful knowledge of natural laws which enables him to unravel the mysteries of earthquakes and terrestrial phenomena generally. If “Molecule” has been'so interested why has he remained silent so long? Perhaps he regarded as mere “platitude” or “megalomania” the published prediction that an island would rise in the Tongan Group on the day that it actually did rise. It makes one laugh to imagine Mr. Field consulting “Molecule” or someone else with “a thoroughly technical knowledge of the subject” before making this prognostication. Presumably
“Molecule” is one of those who at first too hastily condemned Mr. Field. If-* may have done so honestly, feeling convinced that no man could possibly have achieved so much and. if honest, he will try to make amends. I ven-
ture to say that Mr. Field's work will remain a foundation stone to science long after Einstein’s work has been forgotten. Its magnitude is such that it is absurd to speak of its being satisfactorily “summarised in 500 words.” In The' Sun Mr. Field is now giving us a series of letters dealing, even imperfectly, with forecasting only, and each letter exceeds 500 words. The formation of a Field Society is now a real necessity. I feel sure it will soon become a world-wide organisation. Its first aim will no doubt be to place Mr. Field’s invaluable work before the world. And I hope “Molecule” will become an active member of it. I hope that he will be able to bring to greater fruition some parts of the work which, Mr. Field says, is already too extensive for one man to do justice to all branches of it. W.G.S. Dargaville.
