RIVAL BUS ROUTES
SERVICE AT CHELTENHAM With a view to saving «C2SO in repairs to Oxford Terrace and Matai Road, Cheltenham, by diverting all bus traffic along the concrete strip through Tainui Road, the Devonport Borough Council made an application to the No. 2 Licensing Authority yesterday afternoon for the necessary permission. The application was opposed by a deputation armed with a petition bearing 167 signatures, and the question was referred back to the borough council.
The solicitor and the engineer to the Devonport Council said that the change of route had been passed by the council at a recent, meeting. Two corners would bo eliminated by the change, and residents would be affected only by having to walk extra distances varying from 70 to 120 yardsTainui Road had been laid down in concrete at a cost of £3,000, and after six years’ wear was still showing the marks of the sacks used during the drying-out.
Mr. Albert E. Glover introduced the. deputation, saying that more residents would be adversely affected than would benefit by the change. The amount involved in repairs lie considered insignificant.
The bus proprietor, Mr. Brinsden. said that there was better, shelter for intending passengers along the present route.
