WINTER RACING

THE MANAWATU PROGRAMME Receipt is acknowledged of the programme for the Manawatu Racing Club’s winter meeting, on Thursday and Saturday, July 31 and August 2. Coming as it does between the Wellington and Grand National meetings, it affords Northern horses an opportunity of a run before going to Riccarton. On the first day the stakes amount to £1,250, the principal events being the Awapuni Steeplechase, £3OO, about three miles; Clifford Handicap, £250. one and a-quarter miles; Manawatu Hunt Cup, £l5O, about three miles; and Stewards’ Handicap. £150; six furlongs. The principal attraction on the second day is the Longburn Hurdles, £250, one and three-quarter miles; and this is backed by tlie Newbury Handicap, £2OO, nine furlongs; Terrace Hack Handicap, £125, one and a-quarter miles; Mcßae Handicap. £l5O, six furlongs. The programme is undoubtedly an interesting one, and will have a good effect on the early spring meetings in the Southern portion of the Island.
