EDGAR WALLACE TOUCH

“A MOST EXTRAORDINARY BANKRUPTCY” WOMAN DEBTOR’S POSITION “This bankruptcy is like a page from Edgar Wallace,” remarked a creditor at a creditors* meeting today. “A whole book, I think,’* observed Mr. R. A. Singer, representing the bankrupt. The dialogue took place at an informal meeting of persons claiming interest in the bankrupt estate ot‘ Winifred Baker, clerk, of Auckland, who was adjudicated bankrupt by Mr. Justice Herdman on May 30. The official assignee, Mr. A. W. Watters, presided over a large attendance* At the outset, the assignee explained that there was no official meeting because proofs of debt had not yet been filed. Every proof must be established and until the creditors were approved there could be no examination. Mr. J. F. W. Dickson, for a creditor: But you are here in the interests of the creditors and must do what you can for them. The Assignee: Exactly, so, but they are not creditors until they are proved. One of the creditors remarked that the case was like a page from Edgar Wallace. . Mr. Singer: A whole book I think. The Assignee: It is certainly a most extraordinary bankruptcy. Mr. Watters said that it would be necessaty to adjourn the meeting so that he could examine the claims of each creditor, tie would make it his duty to have the claims admitted or rejected. A Creditor: This is the fourth meeting that has ended in the same way: let us hope it won’t be the fifth. The Assignee: You must admit it. a very involved matter. This is the first time it has come into my hands.

“I have every sympathy with the creditors, but the meeting must be placed on a proper basis,” said the assignee in adjourning until Wednesday, June 25.
