HOSPITAL SUBSIDIES

THREATENED REDUCTION BY GOVERNMENT LOCAL LEVIES MUST GO UP Press Association FOXTON, Today. Speaking at a public function last evening. Mr. J. K. Hornblow, chairman of the Palmerston North Hospital Board made reference to the anticipated’ £3,000,000 deficit in the Government revenue for the current financial year, as stated by the Prime Minister, and touched n the possible reduction in hospital subsidies. “There is nothing which will prevent sickness.” said Mr. Hornblow, “and the indigent poor and destitute will always be with us. It is our duty to look after them, and if the Government, by reason of a fail in revenue curtails the hospital subsidies either for capital or maintenance purposes, the levies on the contributing authorities will increase if the present efficiency is to be maintained. As it is the hospitals are paying considerable sums to maintain unemployed men and their dependants out. of maintenance.”
