CADET SHOOTING
TAKAPUNA WINS SHIELD PRESENTATION CEREMONY The Takapuna Grammar School was presented yesterday with the Christchurch “Weekly Press” Challenge Shield for the North Island, which is competed for annually by the cadet corps in rifle-shooting contests and which was won by the Takapuna team at the last competition. In winning the shield the Takapuna team registered 69.3 points out of a possible SO, beating the highest score in the South Island competition and making the highest score in the 20 years since the inception of the competition. The presentation was made by Brigadier H. R. Potter, officer commanding the Northern Command, in the school in the presence of the pupils. Professor A. P. W. Thomas, chairman of the Grammar School Board, presided, and Mr. A. Harris, M.P., was also present. The team’s performance had been extremely good, said Brigadier Potter, the score being one point ahead of that of the next team and 10 points ahead of the best in the South Island. He was proud of the winners and the credit they had brought on his command, and he congratulated the principal, Mr. C. M. Littlejohn, upon the splendid company the school had produced. The brigadier presented the shield to Major Short, officer commanding the cadets, and it will hang in the school library for the next year. Silver medals were presefited to the members of the team as follow:—Corporal R. Cornwall, Cadets F. H. Collingwood, E A. Blair, J. R. R. Lee, A. E. Long, F. A. F. Lewis, K. S. Turtill, J. Richardson. G. C. Daniell and F. C. Williamson. Although each boy was entitled to receive a money prize of £l, the £lO has been- -donated by. the winners to the funds of the cadet company. Last year the shield was won by the 30th Cadet Company, Kingsland.
