SUNSHINE APPEAL

PUBLIC GIVES £1,250 PURPOSES OF SCHOOL In the public appeal conducted yesterday on behalf of the Community Sunshine Association, £1,250 was contributed toward the association’s funds. This sum will be exceeded when the final count is made. The association was making the appeal to raise £I,OOO for improvements to the Sunshine School in Nelson Street, the community club, the solarium, the health camp at Ostend, Wa.iheke Island, and the purchase of medical equipment. The response to the sale of the blue forget-me-not emblems of the association was liberal. Mrs. N. E. Ferner, of Arney Road, .Remuera, founded the association and the school for the training and the treatment of the less fortunate children of the City, was bought two years ago. The school embodies the community club, a gymnasium, a woodwork department, an entertainment hall, a buffet, a library, a band room and a sewing room. The solarium at the school was established for the treatment of children suffering from early forms of malnutrition. Some patients are sent from hospitals; others . come from public schools on the recommendation of school medical officers. Dr. L. Ludbrook supervises the sunshine treatment aria a nurse is provided by the Department of Health. There is a staff appointed by the Education Department.

At the 'VVaiheke Island health camp last summer, numbers of children received beneficial treatment. It is hoped to send many more next sum-
