Edendale Headmaster an Expert GIFTS ON RETIREMENT Mr. C. A. Semadeni, retiring headmaster of the Edendale School, is now a graduate of the “University of Handshaking.’’ He takes a place beside the Prince of Wales, the Duke of York, and Mr. L. S. Amery—who is said to have shaken 10,000 hands on his tour of the Dominions. Yesterday Mr. Semadeni bade rare•svell personally to each of 700 pupils of his school. He was presented by the children with an armchair, a rug and a pipe. “I am giving up school work, but I am not going to the North or the South Pole,” said Mr, Semadeni, in returning thanks for the gifts “I am going to stay in Auckland.” He ob served that presents always pleased two people—the giver and the receiver. Bouquets were handed to Mrs. semadeni and Miss Semadeni by two of the infants, and an address was read by a child of one of the school’s first pupils. Later Mr. Semadeni was given a canteen of cutlery from members of the staff, the presentation being made by Miss Rose Mahon, infant mistress, who has been associated with the school for 20 years. Mr. Semadeni has been headmaster of the Edendale School since its in ception 21 years ago. His first teaching experience was at Newton, in 1886, and he was assistant at Tauranga and Newmarket, later having sole charge of the Woodslde School, near Manurewa. He was at Devonport for five years, at Pukekohe for two and a-half years, and went back to Tauranga as headmaster. After eight years he went to the position at Edendale from which he is now retiring. Mr. Semadeni will be succeeded by Mr. R. Carnahan, of the Devonport School.
