MANY CARS WRECKED
Sensational 500-Mile Race WINNER AVERAGES 100 M.P.H. Brothers Meet Tragedy on Track MANY racing motor-cars were piled up and wrecked in the 500-miie automobile event at Indianapolis, Indiana, which was won by a youthful Chicago driver at an average speed of over 100 miles an hour.
A mechanic was killed and his brother critically injured when a car leaped a retaining wall.

A message rrom Indianopolis gays Billy Arnold, a youthful Chicago driver, non the 500-mile »Memorial Day automobile race today in 4 hours 48 minutes, averaging more than I'OO miles an hour. Arnold won £II,OOO in cash prizes.
There were . 175,000_ people present. Paul Marshall, a Detroit mechanic, ■was killed when the machine in which he was riding with his brother, C. Y Marshall, crashed into a retainingwall.
Billy Arnold, who drove a Hartz Miller Special, held the lead consistently throughout, threading around wreck after wreck as his opponents piled up and car after car was dragged to the pits. Huge crowds saw the race in which Paul Marshall was killed when the
Duesenberg Special blew a tyre, and leaped a retaining wall. Paul died upon his removal to hospital, where his brother Cy is not expected to live. He has broken jaws and numerous internal injuries. Six other contenders in the race were injured more or less seriously. Never before in the speedway’s history have there been such a succession of crashes, which began in the first lap.
machines figured in one pile-up. The leading cars showed the expected stamina and provided a thrilling race. The winner took all but the first two laps. Arnold, despite protestations that he was all right, was immediately taken to hospital for treatment and rest.
Ten drivers took prizes. Eleven cars were wrecked in crashes and several others were forced out for other reasons
