MOTORCYCLING FIXTURES Tonight.—General meeting of North j Shore Motor-cycle Club at Sutcliffe's Garage, Birkenhead. May IS.—Sports Club run to Henning’s Speedway. May 24-25. —Week-end reliability trial of North Shore Club. June 3.—Grand prix race of Sports Club at Henning’s Speedway. Indefinite. —Championship hill climb of Sports Club. HILL CLIMB DELAYED RELIABILITY TEST NEXT SPORTING FIXTURE ROUTE MAY BE VARIED Owing to the Sports Club being un- j able to make use of Mount Roskill for a championship hill-elimbing competition as bad been arranged, the! event has been postponed indefinitely. It will probably be decided at Mangere Mountain late next month. The next motor-cycle sporting event will be the week-end reliability trial of the North Shore Club, which has been arranged for May 24 and 25. It is hoped to run this event to Whangarei and back through Dargaville, but the committee has re- ‘ served the right to alter this to a shorter course should the roads not be in a fit condition for the trial. The short course, which will be run even if the weather is wet, will be to Warkworth on the first night and back through Tauhoa, Kaukapakapa, and Helensville. The distance is about 170 miles, little more than half the length of the longer test. The trial is to include an easy starting and braking test, and marks will be deducted for noisy machines. Entries will close on May 21. The Sports Club has made this an official run for its riders, and a number of competitors will be forthcoming from its ranks. LOCAL GRAND PRIX RACES PLANNED FOR JUNE 3 Two Grand Prix races have been arranged by the Sports Club and will be run off at Henning”s Speedway, Mangere, on Tuesday, June 3. These events should be decided on a road course, but, this being impossible, they will be run on the track surface, a number of artificial hairpin bends and obstructions being incorporated. This should result in actual trials of skill rather than mere speed tests. The two events proposed are a 50mile race for solo machines and a 10mile contest for motor-cycles and side-cars. A trophy has been donated for the latter by Mr. M. Robinson. A run to the speedway at Mangere to allow members and officials to inspect and plan out the course will be made next Sunday, the party leaving the junction of Great South Road with Broadway, Newmarket, at 9.30 a.m. RELAX THE GRIP A bad driving habit is that of gripping the steering wheel too tightly in driving. It is better to have a relaxed grip on the wheel. The driver will find that he is less tired at the end of a day’s journey. Furthermore, the vibrations of the road are not transmitted to the arm of the driver when there is a loose grip on the wheel, but when the arm and wheel are rigidly connected by , a tight grip the body is absorbing too much of the road shock. The better drivers are noted for their relaxed positions.
