Hawera Form Under Review

PROMISING PERFORMERS Special to THE SUN WELLINGTON, Today. Some interesting form was revealed during the Egmont winter meeting last week —form that has an important bearing on this week’s gathering at Wanganui. In considering the form it is worth while keeping in mind the fact that the racing was held on a

course in much better order than usually is the case in winter. These had been no rain at Hawera for some time, but heavy dews and frosts had taken the sting out of the going. While Goldlik© Avon on the opening day of the meeting, luck was against him on the second day. He should score again soon. For Later On Calamine was not well backed on either day, and he has done a fair amount of work, but is not ready. When at his best he is a useful hack. Ho is not engaged at Wanganui on Thursday, and probably will be right by June or July, when the Otaki and Wellington meetings will be held. Patearoa does not race with much luck. He was considered by those who had been watching his work to possess a "good rough chance" of winning a race on the trip, but his record was three minor placings. He finished close behind Goldlike and Blue Paper on the first day, and ran second to Paiko and Valstreet on the second day. Each of his dividends showed a profit and backing him evenly would have left one a little on the right side. Glenstar Will Improve Glenstar ran two good races among the hurdlers, but his two seconds left his backers at a loss. He ought to improve. Iloromea looks big but well. She did not become dangerous at any part of her race, but will be one of the improvers from now on. Tiega ran badly and was lame when brought back to the bird-cage. His chance of doing much during the winter looks remote. Will Come Good By schooling so well at Trentham before leaving for Hawera, Diana’s Lad made an army of friends for himsalf, with the result that he was favourite for the Hack Steeplechase on the opening day. He ran a good race but had no chance against Waitaunaha. Two days later he contested the open steeplechase, and again finished second, this time to Aurora Borealis, who stayed too well for him. Diana’s Lad jumps well and is useful enough to win a small steeplechase this season. He is in the Century Hurdles at Wanganui. Havering looked well and raced well. He was started only once, and is not in at Wanganui on Thursday. Paleta was big in condition, but ran a good race in his one start. Orazone finished very badly in the mile and a-quarter handicap on the first day. This was the worst form she had shown for a long time. The Swell is racing really consistently and should take a hand in whatever he contests at Wanganui. He looks exceptionally well. Manly ran well one day and poorly the next. Mountain Heath failed each day when well .supported. He was one of the leaders on the first day, and was kept at the back on the second day, but neither way could be win. However, he is very well and may make amends at Wanganui.
