“HEROINE IN REALITY”

DEVONPORT’S PROUD BOAST SWIMMING PRESENTATIONS “Devonport may well feel proud that it can meet a heroine in reality,” remarked Mr. E. Aldridge, Mayor of Devonport, last evening, ■when making a presentation of a gold wrist-watch to Miss Eila Munro, in recognition of her extraordinary effort in saving three people from drowning at Muriwai last February. Ml*. Aldridge characterised the actions of Miss Munro as valiant, and as exhibiting the finest characteristics of human nature, the risking of one’s own life for others. Devonport citizens were proud of Miss Munro and the subscriptions for the purchase of the watch came from Auckland and Devonport citizens and the Devonport Borough Council. As an additional honour, the North Shore Amateur Swimming Club will hold an annual competition for the Eila Munro Cup, which was presented, through the Devonport Borough Council, by Mr. J. Hislop, Deputy-Mayor of Devonport. The winner of the first race for the cup was Miss Watson.

The presentation to Miss Munro was made at a. prize-giving last evening in the Parish Hall, Devonport, of the North Shore Amateur Swimming Club. There was a large attendance, including the Mayor and councillors. Mr. E. IT. Little, president of the club, commented on the remarkable growth of the club and urged citizens to help make 4t the premier club. Fifty-two prizes (which included 25 cups) were distributed by the Mayor. A humorous touch was a presentation to the club’s “unsuccessful polo team.” The prize list was;
