TRAM EXTENSIONS
WORK SOON TO START AT REMUERA MR. ASHLEY PROTESTS The Remuera tram extensions will be undertaken early in February, according to a report made to the Transport Board yesterday by the manager, Mr. A. E. Ford. The board agreed that the work shall be carried out by Brierly and McLeod, who were the lowest tenderers, aud who are now excavating on the Dominion Road and Point Chevalier extensions. The tracks will be extended on the Remuera route as far as the Meadowbank Road corner. This extension is third on the list of works to be undertaken with the loan money sanctioned by ratepayers In May. A protest against prosecution of Lhe work was made by Mr. G. G. Ashley, who considered the Mount Eden extension should have priority. The Remuera bus service was paying its way and could wait, but the Mount Eden service was losing £3,000 a year. He gave notice to move at next meeting the recission of a minute placing Remuera third on the schedule of works. Mr. A. J. Entrican said the Remuera extension should proceed immediately because it was desirable to develop Waitarua Park. Mr. E. H. Potter suggested that, trackless trolley cars should be used on the Remuera extension. “There is no evidence that trams will bo suitable or will pay their way in that area,” he said.
