FIREMAN GIVEN GOLD STAR FUNCTION AT THAMES From Our Own Correspoiidcnt THAMES, Today. In honour of a fireman, Foreman E. Kenny, who had served 25 years as a member of the Thames Volunteer Fire Brigade, a big function was held in the social hall of the brigade building on Saturday. Superintendent Garrett presided. Mr. Gilbert, president of the New Zealand Fire Brigade Association, was present, and also the secretary, Hr. Watts. In making a presentation of a gold star to Mr. E, Kenny, the superintendent paid a high tribute to the service the recipient had given to the community during his 25 years' service as a fireman. I-ie instanced that during the period mentioned,_ the maximum fire calls had been 1,285, and Foreman Kenny’s record was 1,236 calls answered. Mr. Garrett remarked that this was the second gold star that had been won by the Kenny family, the other holder being Mr. George Kenny, who was still an honorary member. air. W. Bongard. Mayor of Thames, said the Thames Borough Council was the only body in New Zealand

that augmented the gold star with a gold medal. It gave him great pleasure. on behalf of the citizens, to present Mr. Kenny with the borough's gold medal. It was gratifying to citizens to know that they had such an efficient brigade. Foreman Kenny suitably responded. Other speakers were Mr. A. M. Samuel, M.P., and Messrs Gilbert; Watts and C. S. Donovan. Prior to the gold star function, silver bars were presented to Firemen C. Bunting for seven years’ service, F. Scott, seven years' service. DeputySuperintendent A. Fleming, 11 years, M. Hosking. 11 years, A. White, 13 vears. Chauffeur F. Wilton, 15 years. During the evening songs and musical items were given by Messrs. G. Kirby, Arthur Briggs, E. Watson, If. Beach, .T. A. Bailey. W. Johnson, Les White, K. Boys and Awanui Orchestra.
