Final payments for the Palmerston North Stakes, six furlongs, run on the second day, are as follow:—Admiral Drake, Paganelli, Consent, Hunting Cry, Duellona, Miss Ransom, Chrysology, Cimabue, Princess Betty and Roi de VaL LURE FOR THUGS BOOKMAKER’S LESSON COST HIM £4OO A few bookmakers are accustomed to the feel of a nicely ironed, thick wad of notes next their heart in the left-hand inside vest pocket. Sydney thugs probably know this. Hence the attack on the bookmaker by a thug in Rushcutter Bay the other night after the fight, and a resultant loss of £670. It was the old custom for most books to carry about a lot of ready cash. Bookmakers didn’t want to be bothered dropping it into a bank from one meeting to another, knowing that they might so soon be in need of it. Consequently many bettors, big and small, were known to carry about rolls running into £SOO, or even over £I,OOO. Picked Their Mark Yet strangely enough in, the good old days they were seldom molested. Books were so often good Samaritans to anybody in need. Books long in the game take no risk of being caught with big sums on them. Jim Hackett, leviathan of the ring, has often been known to borrow a pound from a companion to meet some unexpected situation. He and all other well established fielders who know the risk of carrying big sums have long availed themselves of the safe deposits. On Saturday night after the races it is possible to drop the £2,000 or £3,000 that some of the bigger men carry in one of three or four different places where there is no risk of loss. Tattersall’s Club and City Tatts. and some of the lesser clubs have strongrooms where money can be deposited. Officially Sealed The books are given leather bags into which they put their money. These are sealed in official presence, and then put in strongrooms beyond the reach of burglars. There are the public safe deposits, too. A bookmaker in the habit of carrying his money home and planting it in the fireplace flue, discovered that even the secret hiding place wasn’t safe. It cost him £4OO to find out. With so many convenient deposits at their disposal now, the books who carry their money with them nowadays are very few. For Yearling Sales Mr. T. H. Lowry's entries for the National yearling sales in January include two colts and two fillies. Hitherto the Hawke’s Bay breeder has mated Psychology with mares of the Desert Gold Line, and has bred Grandcourt to his mares from Gossip, but this season’s draft represents a change, which appears to have produced the happiest results. The Psychology youngsters include a great brown colt of exceptional promise from Pomparler, by Finland from Gossip, while one of the Grandcourts is a handsome bay filly from Orozino, by Finland from d’Oro, a. sister to Desert Gold. An Improving Stayer
Shrewd is a likely winner of distance handicaps this , year, and it is not too much to say that he has even an outside chance in the Auckland Cup. He is a natural stayer, and invariably has been going very strongly at the finish of middle-distance races. He ran a great race in the Feilding Cup, and owing to a slow beginning was compelled to race right round his field on the turn to the straight. But for this he would have made Rabbi’s task more difficult. It is not absolutely certain whether he will go to Auckland or
whether he will be kept for meetings In this part of the island at the end of the month, but the Auckland meeting Is the more likely. The flattering handicap in the Auckland Cup has not favoured him, but for all that he should give a good account of himself.
