Mild Surprises at Taumarunui

DOUBLE TO HAKANOA | MASTER ROLEY’S HURDLES Special to THE SUN TAUMARUNUI. Frida v. Unpleasant weather faced the Taumarunui Racing Club for the inauguration of its two-day meeting at the j Mata puna course today. Showers set r in just after the opening event, and i continued intermittently throughout ; the day, the track becoming heavier as the sport progressed. The unremitting use of the scratching pen l saw numerous defections in all events, [ fields in the Cup, Hurdles, Matierc 1 Hack, and Rangaroa Flying dwindling . down to one-dividend propositions. Backers exercised fairly good judgment, and well-backed horses prevailed in most of the races. A feature 7 of the day was Hakanoa’s success in both the Taumarunui Cup and Flying

Handicap. An unfortunate occurrence in the Cup somewhat assisted him to victory, but notwithstanding, he won so impressively as to leave little doubt that ho would have provided an interesting tussle even had Ohinemuri completed the course. The Cup Smash Maeroom, Billikins, Glen star, and Master Holey failed to parade for the Taumarunui Cup, only live candidates seeing the post, most support being for IT. Gray’s mount, Ohinemuri, who was at extremely short odds. However, a lot of interest was taken out of the race when Sir Burnett fell, and brought down the favourite. Both C. Goulsbro, rider of Sir Burnett, and H. Gray, were momentarily stunned by the fall, but after a short lapse of time the former was able to return to the birdcage littflb the worse for the mishap. Gray was not so fortunate, and after receiving assistance from the ambulance men it was found, he was suffering from a broken collarbone * and facial abrasions. Subsequent inquiry disclosed the fact that Sir Burnett came down owing to the bandages on his forelegs loosening. For failing to comply with the Rules of Racing, which state that bandages must be stitched on, G. White, owner and trainer of Sir Burnett, was lined £5. The sum of £10,247 was handled by the totalisator, compared with last year’s one-day meeting of £ll,lßß, a decrease of £941. Trial Plates The opening event saw Parfait Amour score the first win of his career. He and Nassau Lady monopolised the betting market, carrying £270 and £267 respectively, with a substantia] drop to Measurer £9l, and Dainty Manners £69. The latter was first away, and she led along the back from Derry Belle, Rose Willonyx, Parfait Amour and Searcher. As they approached the top Derry Belle had taken up the running from Dainty Manners, Parfait Amour, Lady Eustace and Rose Willonyx. Turning for home Derry Belle, Dainty Manners and Parfait Amour were in close order, and then the favourite shot away to make a one-horse race of it, winning very easily by four lengths. Dainty Manners. who paid more than the winner, was second, three lengths in front of the big outsider, Derry Belle, and next over the, line were Rose Willonyx, Rangitown, Measurer, Nassau Lady, Searcher and Lady Eustace, with Star Lupin last. Taringamotu Hack

The favourite in the Hack sprint. Partial Eclipse, failed unaccountably. The Avondale mare carried £366 and Abbess £5 less, while Rose Lupin £ll6 was at a great price. Snow Prince had charge along the back from Abbess, Rose Lupin, Partial Eclipse, Ruby Dawn, Abbey Queen and Tasty. Nearing the top bend Abbess and Abbey Queen were together ahead of Snow Prince and Rose Lupin, and at the home turn Abbess had a slight call over Abbey Queen, with Rose Lupin, Snow Prince, Partial Eclipse, Ruby Dawn and Tasty bunched close up. Abbess was well clear half-way up the running, but then Rose Lupin put in her claim, and Abbess had to be bustled along to get a short head decision over the filly. Abbey Queen was two and a-half lengths back in third berth, and then followed - Snow Prince, Ruby Dawn, Tasty and Partial Eclipse. Taumarunui Cup The race for the Taumarunui Cup was a sensational affair, two out of the five runners falling, including the hot favourite, Ohinemuri, who carried £529, and was ridden by H. Gray. Glena Bay £294, was second choice* with Hakanoa £275 fourth fancy almost as well backed. Glena Bay got away badly and was soon tailing the field, Ohinemuri and Hakanoa leading up the straight from Sir Burnett. The latter then took up the running and led past the stands from Hakanoa, Ohinemuri and Wenday, with Glena Bay still well back. Pulling hard, Sir Burnett had just arrived at the entrance to the back stretch when he was seen to falter and fall, and over him toppled Ohinemuri. This left only three horses in the race, Hakanoa being well clear of Wenday, who in turji was well ahead of Glena Bay. Thus they raced throughout, Hakanoa having no difficulty in going on to win easily by three lengths ' from Wenday, with another three lengths back to Glena Bay. The winner was aided considerably by the accident. Hector Gray, who has not been back in the saddle six weeks, received a broken collarbone, while C. Goulsbro was more fortunate, escaping with a shaking. The accident means that Gray will have to make a quick recovery if he is to fulfil his riding engagements at Ellers!ie on Boxing Day. Matapuna Hack White Ringlet looked like bringing off a big surprise, but she stopped badly over the last bit and finished out of a place. Joy Germ (£296) and Awamutu (£223) were the best backed, but there was only £BS on -Abbey Queen, who was making her second appearance. Luxurious, White Ringlet and Awamutu were the first to show out, but when they had settled down White Ringlet was in front from Awamutu, Iviritahanga, Joy Germ, Pure Tea and Norval Tea. White Ringlet was well clear at the home turn from Awamutu, Abbey Queen, Pure Tea and Joy Germ. The favourite came fast on the outside to win by a neck from Abbey Queen, Perennis finishing very fast on the rails three lengths away. White Ringlet was fourth, and was followed by Awamutu, Luxurious and Princess Snow. Manunui Hurdles In a four-horse field, Archeen £395 and Master Roley £259 were the fancies, the latter being at a remarkably fine price. Archeen tried to win all the way, Otranto never being far away. Archeen, Otranto and Master Roley rose at the last fence together, the last-named drawing out on the flat to win by a length and a half from Archeen, who tired badly and only just got second money a neck in front of Otranto, with Spalpiko further back.

Matiere Hack Bahama, who has hot won a race for just over three years, came to light in the live-horse field in the Matiere Hack, and they were a very poor lot. Public fancies were Valquette, £ 360, and Always. £334, but Bahama, £lB3, was at a good price. Terrapeen led at the end of a furlong from Valquette, Bahama and Day Lass, with Always tailing off. Bahama was in charge crossing the top from Valquette, Terrapeen and Day Lass, the last-named moving up into second place at the home turn, while Always had also made a move forward. Once in line Bahama held his own to win by a length and a-half from Always, who finished strongly three-quarters of a length in front of Day Lass. Valquette was fourth and Terrapeen last. Rangaroa Flying Scratch ings in the Rangaroa Flying Handicap reduced the field to four runners, the surprising part about the race bein'g the poor support for Hakanoa after his impressive win earlier in the day. Billikins (£464) was a popular fancy, while Marble King carried £363 and Hakanoa only £267. The favourite made all the running and at the end of a furlong Owairaka and Marble King were racing together just in behind her, with Hakanoa close up. The lastnamed put in an effective run crossing the top and led round the home turn on terms with Billikins, the other pair being right up. From this out the race proved the best of good things for Hakanoa, and without being unduly pressed he won comfortably from Billikins, who was a similar distance clear of Marble King. Owhango Hack Numerically quite a good field contested the Owhango Handicap, and when the final adjustments on the totalisator were made the favourite division comprised Grand Arch (£431), Unoco (£369), and Cybele (£284), the second horse, Coll, carrying £166. Abbess and Coll were prominent early, and as the field swept past the stand Foxhound had run in behind Abbess, this pair piloting Coll, Unoco, Cybele, and Red Day into the back stretch. Abbess went out by herself five furlongs from home, but she' came back to her field approaching the straight, and only had a slight advantage over Coll as they turned in*o the home stretch. In a fine finish, Cybele just managed to get up and secure a halflength decision over the outsider, Coll, who beat the tiring Abbess by three parts of a length. Unoco was fourth, and then came Grand Arch and Foxhound. Additional results are as follow: MAN UN UI HACK HURDLE RACE HANDICAP Of £100; 1£ miles 2—MASTER ROLEY (Geo.
