BETTING IN POST OFFICE
TELEGRAPHISTS INVOLVED REPORTS EXAGGERATED According to one o£ the telegraph officials at the Auckland Post Office, the reports of those involved in the tapping of telephone wires last Monday have been very much exaggerated. Only 10 men are involved and then not very seriously. The first report of the affair stated that 40 men had been apprehended. The total staff employed is 130. The official also stated that there had been no leakage of information. Tho inspectors who had come from Wellington desired to find out whether any betting was being done over the wires in the office. It is admitted that the office wires were being used for private conversation by members of the staff and this is not allowed according to regulation. The man who is most seriously involved was merely doing the work for others on the staff and was not interested personally. Last evening the Inspectors of the P. and T. Department returned to Wellington, where they will submit a report to the secretary of the Department. The punishment, if any, will be decided by the head of the Department.
