BIRTHDAY OF UNION
BAKERS’ 40TH ANNIVERSARY RECORD WITHOUT STRIKES The fortieth anniversary of the Auckland Bakers’ and Pastrycooks’ Union of Workers is to be celebrated this evening, when a smoke concert will be held. The history of the union is a fascinating one, and is filled with incident in the long struggle for organised effort in obtaining better wages and conditions. The inaugural meeting of those interested in the formation of the union was held in December of 188?, when a strong group was to watch the interests of those engaged in the trade at that time. Mr. John Birnie was the first secretary. He will be a guest at the “smoke-oh” this evening. From this small group of 40 men grew the present strong union of 300 members, while the meeting also gave rise to the formation later of the Hotel and Restaurant Workers’ Union. The Bakers’ Union possesses the happy record of having existed for y? ar ®. without a strike. Before the Arbitration Court was established, a strike was threatened, and all the men gave a week’s notice in anticipation of such an event. The dispute was settled before the termination of the time » an <* things went smoothly on. Coxon is the present president, and Mr. E. J. Watson secretary.
