DISORDERS IN HAITI
HOOVER ORDERS MARINES TO BE READY MARTIAL LAW INVOKED United l*. A.—By Telegraph—Copyright Reed. noon. WASHINGTON, Friday. President Hoover has ordered marines to be held in readiness to be sent immediately to Haiti, where disorders have pecessitated the establishment of martial law by the American authorities. Some 700 marines are already there, and the High Commissioner. Brigadier-General Russell, has reported the invocation of martial law had a quietening effect at Port au Prince and Cape Haitian: but the authorities are apparently still worried about further developments resulting from the Haitian studeuts* strike, which spread to the industrial and civil employees. Disorder among the Customs House strikers resulted in injury to two American officials. EXTREMELY SERIOUS The situation in Haiti, which led to the proclamation of martial law at Port au Prince and Cape Hailien on Thursday, is described by the Secretary of State, Mr. H. L. Stimson. as exceedingly serious, because of popular excitement and the outbreaks among the irresponsible elements. The strike in the Customs offices, which threatened serious complications, resulted in martial law being proclaimed. United Stales Marine Corps guards are patrolling the city. All is quiet. The United States ship Wright, at Norfolk, Virginia, lias been ordered to sail on Saturday with a detachment of marines for duty overseas. It is presumed that Haiti Is her destination.
