CRIMINAL SESSION
COMMENCES ON TUESDAY BIG CALENDAR AHEAD Opening on Tuesday morning, the last criminal session of the Auckland Supreme Court this year will be the largest' for two years. The calendar includes 25 cases, which are expected to occupy Mr. Justice Herdman and Mr. Justice Smith for fully two weeks. The list contains a number of big cases, including a charge pf murder, one of manslaughter against a woman, three cases of alleged negligent driving causing death, and one of attempting to pervert or defeat the course of justice. The persons committed for trial and the charges against them are as under: —
Darcy Lewis Goodman, attempted carnal knowledge and indecent assault on a female, at Thames. William David Weller, negligently driving a car, while intoxicated, causing death, at Auckland. Frederick Ernest Vogwill, negligent driving causing death, at Auckland. William Philip Payne, theft as a servant of New Zealand Railways’ money. Adeline Pyle, manslaughter, at Waihi. Minnia Clamest Horrocks, bigamy, at Auckland. George Caffery, murder, at Auckland. John Gilbert Helleur, breaches of the Bankruptcy Act, at Auckland. John Robert McMullan, indecent assault on a male, at Auckland. Jessie Morris, procuring abortion, at Auckland. Patrick Byrne, breaking and entering by night with intent to commit a crime, at Auckland. Harry Collins and Henry Girling Arnold, breaking and entering a dwelling and committing theft, at Auckland. William Bobbett, attempting to obstruct, pervert or defeat the course of justice. Arthur Douglas Wylie, theft and breaches of the Bankruptcy Act. Martin Charles McCarthy, indecent assault on a female, at Thames. Alfred Carter, indecent assault on a male, at Auckland. James Francis Wiffen, breaking and entering a shop by day with intent to commit a crime, at Auckland. Herbert Biddulph, negligent driving causing death, at Auckland. James McDonald and James Walsh, mischief, breaking and entering shop and theft, at Auckland. Thomas Alfred Botterlll, forgery, at Auckland. Sarah Janes Biown, forgery Aid theft, at Auckland. Leo Mathew Dwyer, mischief, at Auckland. Balder Singh Share, indecent assault on a female, at Auckland. David Barry, forgery, at Auckland. Scotty Wera, theft of a mare, at Papakura. HEAVY CIVIL LIST The civil business of the session, which is particularly short owing to the legal holidays commencing on December 20, is very heavy. The position is complicated, too, by the fact that one judge will have to take the Hamilton session on November 19. Fifteen jury cases have been set down, including two special jury actions, and special juries are to be summoned in several others. In addition a divorce suit is to be heard before a jury of 12.
