ANIMAL WELFARE WEEK
A THOUGHT FOR DUMB CREATURES This week the Dawn Lady lias been requested to have a chat with her Sunbeams about “Kindness to Animals,” for this is the beginning of Animal Welfare Week, when dogs and cats, little white rabbits and all other members of the animal kingdom, must be treated as uncrowned kings and queens. All children love animals. That is why the little ones take toy rabbits, stuffed elephants, and teddy bears to bed. They love their warm furry feel and the thought that they are protecting something. When your dog tugs at his chain and looks at you with soft pleading eyes; do you know what he is saying? He is saying:—“lt’s a sunny day; take me for a run. You scamper about all day. Why shouldn’t I?” And when lie whimpers and sniffs the air, lie is saying:—“Where is that bone you promised me? Surely you haven’t forgotten?” Puss is shut out at night while we are snug in bed, but sometimes she must long- for a warm basket in a cosy corner. She has no way of telling us, so we must think and act for her. One wonders just what species of cruelty Ralph Hodgson had witnessed when he wrote “The Bells of Heaven” — ‘Twould ring the bells of Heaven, The wildest peal for years, If Parson lost his senses And people came to theirs. And he and they together Knelt down with angry prayers For tamed and shabby tigers And dancing dogs and bears, And wretched blind pit-ponies, And little bunted hares. PUZZLERS Word Square: 1.
