TE AWAMUTU DANCE
ANNUAL BALL FOR MENTAL HOSPITAL PATIENTS On Thursday evening the annual fancy dress patients’ ball at Tokanui mental hospital took place, and proved a great success. The patients, of whom about 100 attended, nearly all wore novel and quaint costumes, which were seen to advantage in the grand march. The guests for the occasion included Mrs. W. H. Wood and Mr. C. F. Battson (official visitors), the Mayor and Mayoress of Te Awamutu, Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Downes, and the Presbyterian home missionary for Ivihikihi district, Mr. F. Smith. A welcome was accorded them by the superintendent, Dr. Prius, Mrs. Prius, and senior members of the staff. The judges were Mr. and Mrs. Downes and Mrs. Battson, who had no easy task in making the awards. Among the fancy dresses were early Victorians. tramps and “dudes,” Mephistopheles, , and sylphs, a Hawaiian maid and one from the Tyrol, butchers and Red Indians. Jews and Turks, pierrots and pierettes. Members of the Ancient Order of Frothblowers were also represented, with columbines and harlequins, a Witch of Endor. and a Red Cross nurse, John Dull, and a Bolshevik. In presenting the prizes, Mr. Downes expressed the visitors’ thanks to Dr. and Mrs. Prius, Matron Temple, Deputy-Matron Tunbridge. and the Messrs. Howie (principal warder) and Riordan, for the opportunity of being present at such an enjoyable function.
Dancing was kept up till about eleven o’clock, with an interval for supper.
