RESCUE OF BOY
DEVONPORT SWIMMER’S BRAVERY FIGHT AGAINST TIDE Swimming half a mile against a strong current, Clifford Hayson, aged 18, rescued a boy at Devonport this afternoon just after 4 o’clock, and took him safely to the shore. The boy, whose names was Holmes, was riding a scooter along the vehicular ferry wharf. He struck a pile and shot over into the water. Hayson, who was fishing from the wharf, immediately dived into deep water to rescue the boj T who had sunk out of sight. There was a strong tide running. Hayson kept on swimming until Holmes rose, and then he grabbed him and, despite the hoy’s struggles, kept him afloat. Hayson swam in the direction of the beach at Devonport and succeeded in reaching it after a trying time in the water. As he gained the shore lie almost collapsed from exhaustion. A large crowd had gathered round and assisted the rescuer and the rescued to safety.
Monty Jackson, of Queen’s Parade, Devonport, who was on the wharf, also dived into the water to assist Hayson. Hayson lives at 13 Vauxhall Road, Devonport. He is a strong swimmer.
