In the Market Place

BANANAS DEARER APPLE VALUES RECEDE Repacked ripe bananas rose again in value in the City Marts today. Supplies are short. All varieties of apples have receded in price. The wet weather during the week is not expected by marketers to affect strawberry production for more than one or two days. t Californian oranges and grapes and Rarotonga n mangos and tomatoes, brought on the Tahiti, were sold this morning. The tomatoes met with a fair demand. Oranges are selling steadily, with the exception of poormans, for which the demand is slack. The shortness of supplies of pears is responsible for a good inquiry. Increasing quantities of new potatoes are causing a falling-off in the rates for Southern potatoes. In poultry sales high values are ruling for cockerels. Well-finished young drakes are realising good prices, and heavy pennings of turkeys are returning satisfactory rates. MARKET CULL COWS NEW WAIKATO VENTURE From Our Own Correspondent HAMILTON, Thursday. Aiming at improving dairy herds of tho Auckland Province by preventing the resale of culled cows and bulls, the Waikato and Thames Valley Co-opera-tive Calf By-Products Company proposes to market through its organisation all culled beef in the same way that it has handled bobby calves. It is claimed that such a system will prove invaluable in checking the reentry into dairy herds of animals with no milking capabilities. It will also bring farmers a good return lor thencullecl stock. This proposal was unanimously endorsed at a conference of dairyfarmers held in Hamilton today. Representatives were present from many Parts of the province. The proposals were fully outlined by 1 Mr. S. C. G. Lye, managing director of the company, after which the following resolution was passed:—"That this conference approves the principle of classification of calves, and that eacli farmer be paid accordinglj r , the directors to decide on the details.” A motion that the conference stipport the proposal of the company handling culled dairy cows and bulls was carried. On the motion of Mr. Tollemache, chairman of the Tauranga Dairy Co., it was decided to adopt the selling on hooks system for the first season, although the Bay of Plenty and Taneatua districts could adopt the cji.f.e. basis if they desired. The latter system of marketing will apply to districts where 25 ton lots are assured at the freezing works.
