TRANSMUTED GOLD
CLAIM BELIEVED TO BE FEASIBLE ATOMIC BOMBARDMENT (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) (United Service) Reed. 11.5 a.m. LONDON, Friday. Commenting on the statement that two New Zealanders had succeeded in transmuting metals into gold, Professor David Low, of the University of London, stated that it had long been thought that this might be possible by atomic bombardment by which they could add or subtract particles from the actual particles composing matter, so that similar elements might be converted.
Professor Low believed that success in spectoroscopic quantities had already been attained in Russia, but the cost of the process probably exceeded the value of the product procured. This was the case when diamonds of microscopic size had been manufactured. He did not doubt that some method would be discovered in the future, but did not believe that the quantity produced would be appreciable for centuries to come.
