SEVEN-ROOMED HOUSE GUTTED OCCUPIER’S NARROW ESCAPE i Awakened shortly after 3 o’clock I this morning by the sound of crackj ling timber, Mr. William Archibald ! had only time to grasp a few clothes and bolt from his burning home. The seven-roomed storey and a- ! half wooden dwelling, 82 Ladies* j Mile, was completely gutted, the back portion being entirely demolished. The fire had a strong hold when discovered, and despite the efforts of the Remuera Fire Brigade none of the furniture could be saved. The house, which was owned by Mr. Archibald, was covered by a policy for £1,500 in the South British Insurance Company, and there was a policy of £2BO in the same office covering the furniture. J The owner was the only member : of the family at home at the time, ; Mrs. Archibald and her two children being out of Auckland. The cause of the outbreak is unj known.
