NEW REGENT
“THE IDLE RICH” Tho New Regent Theatre management have secured another all-talkie for presentation at that theatre. It is “The Idle Rich/’ and the first screening is being given today. The story is just a cross section of tho life of a family of average American city people, white collar workers in offices and stores. The pretty
daughter of the family, a stenographer. marries her employer, a young millionaire, and has just as much trouble cooking bride’s biscuits and living a family life as the bride of a poor man has. I Modern girls who ! Work in offices don’t * learn to cook—and do Mille gets some
brilliant comedy out of the fact, even if some husbands don’t. The cast is exceptionally adequate. Conrad Nagel, whose talking voice has made him famous in many sound pictures, is the young millionaire, a serious-minded young fellow with an infinite capacity for simple pleasures, despite his wealth. Leila Hyams is not only very easy to look at, but convincing as an actress, too, in the part of the pretty bride. Bessie Love, of l “Broadway Melody” fame, scores | heavily as the little flapper sister. The character honours go to James Neill and Edyth Chapman, famous for manv years on tfld stage and among the 'most noted of the screen’s character players today. They extract exquisite humour, and not a little pathos, out of the roles of the father and mother. 3 , _ The use of street noises and such details for dramatic effects, literally creating a background of sound to convey impressions, was one of the clever touches injected by de Mille. In some cases the outside noises of the city tell almost as much of the story as do the actual words of the dialogue. ! The specially selected short talkies will include songs by the Keller Sisters, comedy songs at the piano by Van and Schenck, the well-known comedians, dialogue and songs by Gordon and Squires, a popular vaudeville team, items by “Ukulele Ike,” and a Pathe Sound News. In addition. Arthur G. Frost will play selections on the Wurlitzer organ. June Collyer has been selected to play the leading feminine role in the Richard Dix latest all-talking picture for Paramount, titled “The Love Doctor.”
