PROFITABLE INDUSTRY
CHINCHILLA RABBIT FARMING MARKET FOR SKINS That the Chinchilla rabbit industry was one of the few industries launched in the Dominion over the past decade in which immediate results had come up to prospectus forecasts was the view expressed by a leading fur and skin dealer to a SUN man this morning. The opinion was given in reply to an article which appeared in The Sun on Tuesday last. The article stated that breeders of Angora rabbits were experiencing difficulty in finding a market for the wool, but that breeders of the Chinchilla were finding a market at up to 10s a skin. The dealer instanced the case of Fur Farms, Ltd., the company which had been responsible for placing the Chinchilla rabbit industry on a solid basis in this country. Jts prospectus had estimated the average return a skin at Gs 6d. At tho moment there were a large number of small breeders throughout the Dominion, and no difficulty was being experienced in selling the pelts, which found a ready market. There was also quite a satisfactory market for the carcase, and if the time came when the local market could not absorb the supply, there was every indication that a very profitable export trade, could be built up. In the United States, up to 2s a lb retail was paid for the best rabbits. The English market was also good. 1
