Final Trials at Riccarton

Were Illuminating

CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. Outstanding among the gallops at Riccarton this morning were the efforts of Historic, Full Feather, and Kaiti. who are to be strong rivals in the Winter Cup on Tuesday. Full Feather ran bis last six furlongs in 1.24 4-5: Kaiti easily beat Gold Cure over seven furlongs in 1.38 4-5; and Historic was two lengths clear of Otairi at the end of six furlongs in 1.23 2-5. thus improving a second and two-fifths on Full Feather's figures. Historic, however, was one of the early workers, and the going was not cut up when he galloped. Still, he carried considerably more weight than Otairi, so apparently the Trenthamtrained candidate is near the height of his form. The inside of the trial grass was open for the final workouts, and, as a result of the rain overnight, the track was very heavy, and fast times were out of the question. Best of Morning Historic’s gallop was easily the best of the morning, and he was going so comfortably at the close that he cannot be left out of calculations in the Winter Cup. He had an outing in the Stewards’ Handicap at Wellington last month, and though he ran moderately in that event, the race worked a big improvement in him, judging bv the easy manner in which he defeated Otairi at the close of today’s gallop. He will be in good form on Tuesday, when he will tackle the Winter Cup. Royal Game also was one of the early workers, but he was not extended, and did three-quarter pace for about six furlongs. Lancer and Wrigley were galloped nine furlongs, and accomplished their task in good style. Narrative led Filosol by a length at the conclusion of six furlongs in 1.25, and at the end of a mile Mangani was two lengths clear of Uralla. Working Well Full Feather has been working as well as any of the Winter Cup horses since the Wellington meeting, and his defeat of Sudden Storm by three lengths at the end of six furlongs, in 1.24 4-5, was a notable effort. The Autumnus colt really went seven furlongs, and the manner in which he finished up his task was very impressive. Usually he runs better with a race into him, but he is so fit and well after recent racing that, with the handy weight of 9.3, he will take a lot of running down in the Cup if anywhere within reasonable distance of the leaders over the concluding stages. Though they did not go fast, Zippor and Royal Saxon worked pleasingly over seven furlongs in 1.41 1-5. The time, of course, was slow, but both horses showed an appreciation for the heavy ground, and hit out in fine style. Zippor, who ranks as a full-brother to Magna Charta. came to Riccarton from the North with a good reputation, and watchers at his home track expect him to run a big race on Tuesday. His race form to date has not been outstanding, but at his last start, with 10.10 aboard, he scored attractively in the Hastings Hack Handicap at the Hawke’s Bay winter meeting. Smart Sprint Roi de Val impressed the onlookers with his five furlongs in 1.7 3-5, of which the last half-mile took 51 4-5 It was an exceptionally good gallop, and what was significant was that he was doing as well at the end as at any other stage. Roi de Val is in the Avonhead Handicap on Tuesday, and despite his 10.9 he is going to be troublesome. Leader and Amor were not hard pushed to get to the end of five furlongs in 1.10, and over a mile Mister Gamp was restricted to three-quarter pace. Kate Kelly and Commenter ran home from the half-mile post in 58, and Novar and a companion recorded 1.54 for their mile effort. Phastar sprinted five furlongs in 1.12, but the going seemed to slow him up over the concluding two furlongs. Kaiti’s defeat of Gold Cure by two lengths at the end of seven furlongs in 1.38 4-5 was an exceptionally good effort, but as Gold Cure had a big weight up he was far from disgraced. The heavy going suited Kaiti, and though he was receiving poundage from his companion his form shows how fit he is. At Wellington last month he performed most consistently and as lie just got touched off in last year’s Winter Cup by Bisox, there is no reason whatever to doubt his ability to stay a fast-run mile. Moreover, the course of schooling he had seems to have improved his pace, and on Tuesday he is expected to put up a big race. Likely Hack Honeycomb again galloped attractively over four furlongs in 52 3-5. He was associated with Juniper over that distance, but the imported horse was a length to the good at the end and seemed to hold something in reserve. If he runs up to his best standard he will make it warm for his companions in the Cashmere Plate on Tuesday. Elysianor pleased the watchers with his five furlongs in 1.12. He was partnered by Glenrowan over that distance, but the Northerner was going comfortably in front at the end. Ely-

sianor is in the Jumpers* Flat with only 9.0, and he may show up i n that race. L Yesterday Wiltshire, who i B joint favourite with Lord Ranald for the Grand National Steeples coughed a little, but he was all right again this morning. In a mile gallop with Horomea which took 1.55. Wiltshire held a break of four lengths at the close Over the same distance Brightlinrrecorded 1.54 1-5. s Gay Jim worked strongly over a mile, but he pulled up showing distinct signs of lameness. It is feared that he has strained a muscle, and unless he makes improvement in the next day or so he may not fulfil his engagement on the opening day. Prickles was bracketed with Vesperus during her six furlong gallop in 1.26 1-5, and at the end she held a break of a length and a -half on her companion. It was Quite a satisfactory gallop on the part of Prickles for she was under a steady puli throughout. Vesperus made an attempt to get on terms with her over the last furlong, but he could not reduce the gap. Emerson For Prickles Prickles has come through her final work this week in great stylo and her Brabazon running shows that she must have a strong chance in the Winter Cup. She was ridden in her work this morning by C. Emerson, so that it appears as if that horseman will have the mount on the mare on Tuesday. Sarnia led Moy Hall by a length at the end of five furlongs in 1.5.- and for their six-furlong gallop First Raid and Sweet Refrain took 1.28. Haze easily beat Troilus over six furlongs in 1.25, and at the end of a mile gallop there was little to choose between Young Thurnham and Maunga. A gallop that contained much merit was that of Malmsey, who recorded 1.23 1-5 for her six furlongs. She hopped away with Red Boa and Glvn Dhu. but at the half mile she was standing up this pair at least four lengths. However, before the turn into tho straight was reached she made a swift run and quickly taking charge came on to win her gallop in easy style from Glyn Dhu. with Red Boa another half a dozen lengths away. Fabriano. Apache and Paris were close together at the end of a mile in 1.56 3-5, and over the same distance King’s Guard and Lord Ranald worked separately. The Winter Cup candidate Bonogne led Sagittarius by two lengths at the end of half a mile in 57, and for four furlongs farther Amorist was not hard ridden to record 1.55, Indeed, it was a good gallop, and Amorist is going to be hard to beat in the Trial Hurdles on T uesday.. Anolo worked on the sand, and King Balboa, who looks as fit as hands can make him, sprinted up the straight. Storm Raid and Royal Flower ran home from the half-mile attractively. Overhaul and Black Duke were at Riccarton this morning. Both horses look vary well, especially Overhaul. Interesting Jumping Gala Bay (Tilson) and Aberfeldy (E. Shaw) were schooled over a round of the hurdles, both horses giving a good display. Rangi Sarto, a Grand National candidate. was schooled over the brush fences, but his display was not impressive. Birkbeck (J. V. McKay) and Perle de Leon (G. Salt) schooled well over five hurdles. Birkbeck is a really good jumper, and is more than a possibility in the Hunters’ Hurdles. Craigmore still holds his ground in

the Grand National Hurdles, and the way in which he schooled over four hurdles this morning, with L. Hunt in the saddle, shows that he is getting back to form. He cleared each jump attractively. Antrim Boy <W. Cooper), Aurora Borealis (A. S. Ellis), and Bemocratic (A. McDonafl) schooled well over the hurdles. After jumping four obstacles, Aurora Borealis was pulled off, and the other pair continued on. There was little between Antrim Boy and Democratic racing to the last hurdle, but Antrim Boy fell. Locarno CP. Adams) and Red Fuchsia (A. McDonald) again impressed the spectators with their jumping ability. The pair were associated in a school over two rounds of the hurdles, and each gave a faultiest display. Dubious (L. Hunt), Taramoa fC»Dempster), and Tehaunui (A. YouiVman), set out to jump the big country. The trio raced in close attendance for the last round, where Tehaunui was pulled off. Over the last circuit Dubious asserted his superiority, and in the end wound up a comfortable winner from Taramoa. Dubious has seldom looked so well as he does at present, and he is sure to make It warm for the opposition in the Enfield Steeples. Heisler (W. Cooper) and Rangawhio (A. S. Ellis) jumped three hurdles in good style.
