Three Favourites and Four Outsiders

UNEXPECTED WINS NAPIER WINTER MEETING (Special to TUB SUXJ NAPIER, Friday. The success of outsiders in the first three races at Grcenmeadows today looked bad for backers, but the favourites won three out of the last four races and thus enabled their followers to come out on the right side. Nevertheless, the wins of the four littlefancied horses—Abisogno, Crishna, Mouri Rangi and Merry Damon —were no doubt responsible for the small deficit of £BS on a modest totalisator turnover, £8,096 against £B,lBl. There was a fair attendance, the weather was fine, and the course a bit soft. , Araby fell on the flat while contesting the Moteo Hack Hurdles, and while he was on the ground he received a kick from the galloping W llmoreana. Araby was found to have a broken leg and he was subsequently destroyed. Sylvan Bell, the favourite, continues to race unluckily, for in the Meeanee Hack she appeared to be going fairly well when she came down rather heavily. The fall seriously interfered with Tourist, so the unfortunate mishap put both first and second favourites out of the reckoning. Tourist is in fine order and may make amends SC The Avondale-trained Merry Mason got left in the Settlers’ Hack, but he was galloping over everything else at the finish. Moteo Hack Hurdles Kaiti was only a slightly better favourite than Fine Acre and Tresham. Kaiti, Purseproud and Grand National (in line), led for over a mile, with Asibsogn© several lengths back and Fine Aero moving up from last, whilo Tresham was well back. Kaiti retired with over two furlongs to go and left Grand National in charge, but Abisogno finished best and won easily by six lengths, while Grand National had to be ridden out to beat Wilmoreana by a neck. Fine Acre was a poor fourth, but was impossibly placed early. Both Tresham and Kaiti should do better soon. Petane Steeplechase Most money came for Royal Elm in the Petane Hack Steeplechase. He was the leader for a while, but when the field settled down Ponjola and Alaric took charge and led till three furlongs from home, with Crishna in behind them. Alaric hit the fence two furlongs from home very hard, and Crishna was in charge at the next jump, coining on to win by a length from Bonayron, who finished fast, Royal Elm was four lengths away third and Ponjola and Aurora Borealis were close up. Mandarine fell and Lieutenant Bill ran off. Meeanee Hack Backers of the favourite, Sylvan Bell, in the Meeanee Hack Handicap, got a poor run for their money, as the Lord Quex mare fell after going a couple of furlonas. Barry, the rider, appeared to Glyn Dhu was left badly at the start, and Mouri Rangi led into the straight from Mangaheri, with Last Mark coming fast. Mouri Rangi finished on best, and won by two lengths from Mangaharei, with Bold Front coming on fast in third place. Last Mark and Night "Watch were next. Napier Steeplechase Over half the money on the machine for the Napier Steeplechase was carried by Ballyfarnon and Frisco Jack, and of the pair Ballyfarnon was favourite. Ballyfarnon led all the way till well Into the last round. Woden and Frisco Jack lay next, but "Woden eventually dropped off and Bendower moved up. Ballyfarnon won easily by half a dozen lengths from Bendower, who finished more strongly than the tiring Frisco Jack and beat him home by about a length. Sometime did not complete the course. Ahuriri Hurdles Home Made was favourite for the Ahuriri Hurdles. Beaumont, Jen and Peshwa were the early leaders, but Jen and Peshwa hit hard at the hurdle in front of the stand. Home Made was lying in behind the leaders, and with a mile to go he began to move up. He was in line with the leaders five furlongs from home, where Beaumont was done with. Home Made ran on strongly and won easily by five lengths from Novar, who finished fairly well and beat Peshwa by two lengths for third. Beaumont was fourth. Jen fifth, and Perle de Leon and Nukumai, together, last. -Stewards’ Handicap Another favourite, King’s Jest, was beaten in the Stewards’ Handicap, after having every chance. Road Hog and Royal Damon made the early running, but Huikai and Shrewd were in charge along the back and they led into the straight from Royal Damon, Road Hog and Queen’s Choice. However, Merry Bamon came with a great run and won by a neck from Queen’s Choice, with King’s Jest, a close third and Shrewd fourth. Shrewd was a bit unlucky. Settlers’ Hack In the Settlers’ Handicap Le Champ led into the straight from Rich Harvest. Balloon (the firm favourite), Delude, Ironic and Vinella. Balloon came on to -win by two lengths from Ironic, with Vinella a close third and Rich Harvest fourth. Vinella was a bit unlucky.
