SOUTHERN CROSS

SAILS FOR ISLANDS TO-DAY BIG STORES CARGO Carrying a big cargo of stores for mission stations in the New Hebrides and Solomon Islands, the Melanesian Mission ste'amer Southern Cross is scheduled to leave Auckland at 2 o’clock this afternoon on one of her periodic Islands’ cruises. The vessel limped back to Auckland under a jury rudder on May 8, after her steering-gear had been broken in a storm off Norfolk Island. The repairs here required much more time than was expected, owing to difficulty in docking the ship. Ten missionaries, including five women, who disembarked at Norfolk Island to await the vessel’s return, will have to be picked up and transported to the various Island stations. The half-yearly supplies of stores which the ship wili carry are already over a month overdue, and many have inconvenienced the missionaries. The material for the bishop’s house is also awaiting transhipment at Norfolk Island.
