BAD RECORD DISCLOSED (From Our Resident Reporter) WELLINGTON, Thursday. A bad record in Australia told against Frank Lewis when bo appeared before Mr. Justice MacGregor in the Supreme Court at Wellington today on charges of theft, forgery, uttering and false pretences. Counsel pleaded that Lewis had committed the offences while feeling disgruntledover the loss of £6O stolen soon after his arrival in the Dominion last month. Mr. Justice MacGregor: Before he was acclimatised, so to speak. Unfortunately his explanation does not tally with his previous record. His Honour then reviewed prisoner’s record in Melbourne ancl Sydney, showing numerous convictions for which prisoner had served several years’ imprisonment. “There is no doubt that this man is a criminal and has come across to New Zealand to pursue his Australian career,” said his Honour, in imposing a sentence of two years’ imprisonment for false pretences and theft, and three years for forgery and uttering.
