OUTSPOKEN ENGINEER

PLAIN TALK IN COUNCIL MEETING PROPOSAL ATTACKED Protesting against a recommendation of the Works Committee concerning plumbing regulations, the engineer of the Takapuna Borough Council made some strong comment at the meeting of the council last evening. The Works Committee recommended that, as requested by a deputation of local plumbers, all plumbing regulations should be left in control of the plumbing inspector and, further, that the council should insist upon drainage contractors providing their own plumbing and drainage plans. “The proposal of the committee simply means the wrecking of the borough’s drainage scheme,” said Mr. Slinger. “I am fed up with the position and if you agree to the recommendation, I will ask you to relieve me of the responsibility for house connections and let me give attention only to the main lines.” Mr. Slinger went on to say that the regulations of the Health Department and Public Works Department were being defied. He maintained that members of the council were not competent to judge the work.

“Hold an Inquiry and bring along the officers of the two departments,” he said. “Let me put my side of the case to them, and if I’m proved right, let the council back me up.” The council adopted the recommendation of the committee.
