YOUTH’S CHALLENGE
DRAMA OF PUBLIC SCHOOL “Young ’Woodley,” John Vqn Druten’s sharp and vigorous drama of public school life, has met with instant approval from the theatregoers of Auckland. There are many who will say that no play has ever seized the problem of adolescent youth more frankly and yet held the issue with such delicate directness. It is another challenge from youth against authority’s failure to meet the needs of a new and freer age. In the hands of such a capable company, the production is well-nigh flawless, and the framework is no less arresting than the drama of the story. Miss Natalie Moya shows a sweet and appealing sympathy, and Lewis Shaw, as Young Woodley, handles sentiment with remarkable skill. Frank Itoyde, as the domineering housemaster, makes an arresting figure. No less convincing is the work of the three prefects. George Preston. Michael Macowan, and Edward Ashley. Even the tortured little fag stands as an essential figure in the poignant drama. The season will continue this evening.
