Courtesies Planned For Cruiser Emden
OFFICIAL DECISION VISIT TO ROTORUA Press Association WELLINGTON, Wednesday. According to an announcement by the Prime Minister today a Minister of the Crown will be present in Auckland on June 26 to exchange with the captain of the German warship Emden on its arrival courtesy calls on behalf of the Government. Sir Joseph Ward pointed out that the captain of the Emden would call on him and his colleagues in Wellington, but as the warship’s first port of call will be Auckland it was desirable that the Government should be directly* represented in the initial courtesy call. He had made arrangements also for the extension of invitations to the captain, as many officers as could be spared, and cadets to visit Rotorua, and for the officers who could not go to visit Waitomo.
CHANGE OF BERTH REQUEST FROM CONSUL Although it was announced earlier in the week that the German warship Emden would berth at the Sheerlegs Wharf, Devonport, a request has now' been made that she be berthed at one of the wharves on this side of the harbour. The German Consul-General, Mr. W. Penseler, has "written to the Auckland Harbour Board asking that the Emden be allow'ed to berth on the city side of the harbour. The warship i 3 to go into dock here, so it is thought that the vessel wishes to berth on the Auckland waterfront only for a day or two for any official visits or functions. As the request from the Consul was rather vague as to dates a letter has been sent asking him for more definite information.
