“ROMANTIC LASSIE”
STOLE TO HELP SHIFTLESS YOUTH MAGISTRATE SYMPATHETIC Describing her as a “romantic lassie,’’ the Rev. Jasper Calder explained the action of an 18-year-old girl charged with theft at the Police Court this morning. According: to the missioner. she had j thieved with the idea of helping a j youth who was likely to lead her astray. He asked that the girl be given a chance, saying that Sister Pat. would take care of her. The girl pleaded guilty on a charge of stealing a camera, a pair of silk stockings, gloves, a bag. a comb, handkerchiefs, and a gold ring, of a total value of £4 16s sd. The goods were said to have been stolen from the girl’s employer on May 30. Chief-Detective Hammond said that the girl had been working for the owner of the goods only a week before she had committed the theft. “She has been led astray, but is otherwise a good girl,” he said. Mr. Calder 'assured the court that the girl would break with the young man who was having such a bad influence on her. “You can’t do anything for him,” he added. Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.: Can’t I? 1 can give him six months. The missioner admitted that was so. “I meant we could do nothing,” lu said. “You can deal with him admir ably, I know'. He will be up again soon. I suppose.” The chief-detective said that he had seen the boy lounging round the court recently, waiting for the girl to come up. “I think he is in the back of the court now,” he said, scanning the gallery. The case against the girl was adjourneyed for six months, the magistrate remarking that he wished to avoid entering a conviction if possible. The girl’s name was suppressed.
