WINTER SUN BATHING
SHELLY BEACH BATHS PETITION TO COUNCIL In accordance with custom, the Shelly Beach and Parnell Swimming Baths will be closed for the winter, because of their meagre patronage. JpROM May 12 to the beginning of June, the Shelly Beach Baths returned a revenue of £1 12s lid, and for the same period Parnell “took” 7s sd. The City Council, therefore, will not reopen them until the middle of October. The caretakers have been put on other council work in connection with the parks department. People have used Shelly Beach Baths during the winter mainly for sun-bathing, although a few hardy souls continue swimming. Doctors actually have clients who come from the South to engage in the warmer salt-water bathing in Auckland.
Today, a baths official told The Sun that repairs were badly needed. Seas striking directly at the baths’ construction work frequently caused considerable damage. A petition, headed by a western suburbs medical man, asking the council to consider the opening of Shelly Beach Baths through the winter, will be presented at the next council meeting on June 20.
