TAKAPUNA RATES LEVIED

DANGER TO BEACHES The Deputy-Mayor, Mr. J. W. Hayden, presided at the meeting of the Takapuna Borough Council held last evening. Representing the Takapuna Central School, Messrs. T. Hanna and G. H. Matthews asked that the borough plumbing inspector should, as a means toward eliminating seasonal epidemics among school children, be directed to disinfect the school each week-end. The council undertook to see that the work be carried out. Acting for a subdividing owner, Mr. S. T. Dibble asked the council to fix the mean high water level on Takapuna Beach. Mr. A. Slinger, borough engineer, mentioned that the point contained in the letter was a means toward the alienation of public rights on the beach. “There is no other course open but to fight the proposal strenuously, as we will lose the beaches unless the council insists that the old survey line, as shown in the old deposited plan, be adhered to.” The council resolved accordingly. Building permits of a total value of £4,603 were authorised to be issued. Six tenders were received for the bus shelter at Rewiti Avenue, that of Mr. N. Howe for £49 10s beingaccepted. Cr. J. Guiniven questioned the propriety of the council having spent the bulk of the second sewerage loan of £119,000 in various parts of the borough without making provision for the drainage of the extensive western area. He moved that plans for a main sewer line extending from Nortliboro Road to the Catholic Orphanage be prepared. After discussion the council acepted an amendment that the Finance Com it tee should bring down a report showing the effect upon borough finance of any substantial expenditure upon sewerage this financial year. The position of the drainage loans to dale will also be reported upon. Rates for the current year were formally struck. A consolidated rate of 9d in the £1 of unimproved values will be charged, together with water charges as per meter readings at the rate of Is 6d a thousand gallons. A rebate of 5 per cent, will be allowed on all rates paid before July 31.
