EXPRESSES DELAYED

WASHOUT ON MAIN TRUNK PASSENGERS TRANSHIPPED Press Association WELLINGTON, Wednesday. A washout, estimated to be 12 feet deep and 75 feet in width, occurred on the railway line between Te Horo and Waikanae this afternoon, and as a result all railway traffic on the Manawatu line was disorganised, trains being unable to pass the spot until late tonight. The washout occurred at a time when expresses were expected from northern stations and from Wellington. It was therefore necessary to despatch trains from Wellington to the spot, and also to have a train in readiness at the other side in order to take passengers from the Wellington-Auckland express. This express should have left Wellington at 2 p.m., but did not depart until 3 p.m. Passengers were duly transhipped at the slip. When the Wellington-bound expresses arrived from Napier and from Newr Plymouth, the passengers were transhipped to trains waiting on the Wellington side of the spot. Pas sengers from Napier arrived in Wellington at 5.30 p.m. instead of at 4 p.m.. and New Plymouth passengers shortly after 9 p.m. instead of at 6.3 p.m. The Limited express to Auckland, scheduled to leave here at 7.15 p.m.. did not leave until 10 p.m. The washout had then been sufficiently cleared to enable to train to pass right through. It is understood that many portions of the main roads are under water, although there has been no disorgan; sation of traffic. WASHOUT REPAIRED This morning the first express from Wellington, due in Auckland at 6.41 o’clock, did not reach the city until 9.28. Passengers had been transhipped at the ■washout and the New Plymouth train was diverted to Auckland. There were no sleepers on the train. The Limited, due at 9.31 o’clock, did not reach Auckland until 12.30 today. The South trains tonight will run as usual.
